Newporter Restoration
“Introducing the most beautiful boat of her time!”
A long time classic, the Newporter 40 beckons back to an era when long range cruising in private yachts was in its infancy. Designed & built by “Ack” Ackerman at Dorchester Shipbuilding Corporation in Dorchester, NJ, this is hull no. 120 of a believed 124 vessels built.
Currently named “Blue Angel” and formerly “Debby Lee”, she will soon take on the name “Pacem”. During the restoration, we’ll call her “Mofilla” (She just needs a little mo filla). The vessel features a hard chine and modest draft of 5 feet. Factory constructed of multilayers of hand-laid-up heavy fiberglass over aircraft grade spruce plywood with sawn oak frames at 12-inch centers, these vessels are known for their seaworthiness and proven ocean crossing abilities. The restoration will require lots of time, blood, sweat, and tears (oh yeah, and money), but when finished, it’ll be like owning a piece of history. She’s a beautiful classic boat and I can’t wait to see her sailing the seas again.
Update: After a 2 year break on the restoration and after Hurricane Matthew wiped out the entire first floor of our home in October of 2016, we’ve turned Mofilla over to our son Brady. Brady will take over the restoration and make Mofilla his home. As long as he finishes the restoration, we’ll sign her over and she will be all his! We’ll even foot the bill for the splashdown 🙂 Good luck with her Brady! If you put the love and care into her she needs, she can take you wherever you want to go!
